About the Book
Karate class begins and students come together to practice their blocks and stances—from crescent kicks to front kicks to tuck roll stands. Dynamic black-and-white artwork of children bowing, kicking, and sailing through the air contrasts with their brilliantly colored karate belts in this rhythmic read-aloud that explores the action and philosophy of karate.

CAROL NEVIUS is a social studies and language arts teacher. She was inspired to write Karate Hour, her first children’s book, when her youngest child started taking karate lessons. She lives in Coral Springs, Florida.

Two of BILL THOMSON’s illustrations for Karate Hour won Certificate of Merit awards in the Society of Illustrator's 46th Annual Exhibition. An assistant professor of illustration at the University of Hartford, he lives in Southington, Connecticut.

* "The world of the karate class comes into up-close focus in this startling, realistic picture book....With the clarity of photographs and many in-your-face perspectives (a foot cracking through a wooden board), the pictures are reminiscent of some of Chris Van Allsburg’s work."
—Booklist, starred review

* "An excellent addition on a popular subject."
