About the Book
Moose is proud of his big, beautiful antlers. So when they fall off one autumn, he doesn’t like it one bit. Without them, he looks like any other moose. Luckily, it’s hunting season, so Moose has to stay inside. He reads, does puzzles, and paints with the materials his best friend, Hildy—a pig—brings him. Then he gets his BIG IDEA. Why not sell his paintings? Moose exhibits his artwork and even manages to strike up a conversation with a passing hunter, who thinks his art is lovely. Readers will cheer for Moose as he dupes the hunter and manages to make a buck in this hilarious story about a moose and his loyal porcine friend.

STEPHANIE GREENE is also the author of the popular Owen Foote chapter-book series. She lives in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, with her husband and son.

JOE MATHIEU is the illustrator of many popular picture books, including Dogs Don’t Wear Sneakers, Chimps Don’t Wear Glasses, and Don’t Be Silly, Mrs. Millie! He lives in Hudson, Massachusetts.

Moose and Hildy: Moose’s Big Idea

"Greene departs from the popular, reality-based "Owen Foote" series (Houghton) to offer lots of laughs in this easy chapter book. Fans of Cynthia Rylant’s "Poppleton" (Scholastic) and other readers stepping up to chapter books will laughingly turn these pages and clamor for more. Mathieu’s frequent black-and-white illustrations expand on the fun."
—School Library Journal

"Moose’s troubles provide a framework for much witty commentary and tongue-in-check character development, and hunter’s acquaintance with Moose as they share an interest in doughnuts, art, and antlers affords several comedy of errors moments as the two consistently fail to recognize each other and yet continue to participate in friendly exchanges. In the detailed illustrations, Moose’s lanky goofiness contrasts pleasingly with Hildy’s plump comfortableness (enhanced with earrings, bracelets, shoes, and seeming lipstick), making them a cheerful and inviting pair. Designed for transitional readers, this little book by the author of the Owen Foote chapter series will be enjoyed by readers-alone and listeners alike."
